Ten-year-old Marius attends the Metro Ministries day center in the municipality of Valea Albestiului near Sighisoara.
A social service offered to children aged 3-14 from Roma families, together with their parents. Like Marius, many of the children from the Roma village have to work or are sent out to beg – few are given the opportunity to attend school. Metro Ministries supports children as they start school, strengthens them on their educational journey, and helps prevent them from dropping out.
This gives more than 50 children a year the chance to break out of the vicious cycle of lack of education and poverty.
In addition to teaching reading, writing, and math, social and emotional skills are also promoted. The day center is also intended to be a place where children can experience security, encouragement, acceptance, and affection and build self-confidence. This includes providing a warm meal, because you can’t learn on an empty stomach.
