Mercy tells her story to Elke Feld from the at a  visit of the German nehemiah team to the Miwani Center in Kenya.

In 2020, our family’s life changed fundamentally when my father had a serious accident and lost his job due to an inability to work. Without his income, we had to leave our home in the city and move to a rural area with even fewer resources. Since then, my mother has worked tirelessly in odd jobs, mostly in agriculture, but her earnings are barely enough to provide for our family of seven – let alone an education for me.

This difficult reality weighs like a burden on our family, but it has strengthened my determination to find a way out of the hardship. I want to create a better future for me and my siblings – without daily worries about food or school fees. That is why I am very grateful that I am able to train as a hairdresser at the Nehemiah Training and Education Center. The training sponsorship program covers the training costs.

I arrived here with no money, clothes or food, just a rucksack – but here I am supported, given food, hope and new perspectives. The training lasts 11 months plus a 3-month internship. I will graduate in December 2025 and hope to be able to work in a hairdressing salon afterwards to gain work experience, support my family and help them find a way out of poverty.

I know that education is the key to changing my life – and I am prepared to work hard and give my best. I thank everyone who has given me this opportunity. God has given me new hope.
